PRESENTATION
La Meirana stretches for 100 hectares, 63 of which are specialized in the Cortese vine and 2 in red berry vines. The planting system is the traditional "Guyot". The name ‘Meirana’ is connected directly to the history of Gavi, indeed one of the first documents where the name Gavi appears is kept in the state Archive in Genova and tells of vineyards and chestnut woods in the area called Meirana.
This document, dated 971 A.D., confirms the wine-growing tradition of the area at the dawn of the history of the Gavi municipality.
The Broglia winery founded by Bruno Broglia continues an ultra-millenary tradition, which is brought forward today with the commitment and passion of the sons Gian Piero and Paolo. Clonal research on the Cortese vine began at Meirana in the 80s with the co-operation of the Agricultural faculty of Turin University and, under the supervision of the Science Professor of the Agricultural faculty of Milan University, other research was conducted in the cellar, particularly as regards the absence of sulphites in winemaking.
3 new clones were selected and certified and have recently been planted over 15 hectares of our new vineyards.
Gavi La Meirana was served on the Vatican tables during celebrations to mark the 25 years of Pope John Paul II's pontificate. It was also offered during the G8 meeting in L’Aquila in July 2009 and at official banquets in the seats of several Italian Embassies.
The first bottles were put on the market in 1974, the same year that Gavi was awarded DOC (controlled denomination of origin) status.
Later, by means of gradual and well-planned investments, the farmhouses on the estate were renovated. In 1982 the new wine-making and bottling cellar was built and in 2000 it was enlarged and renovated.
The standard product is sold under the name of Gavi D.O.C.G. di Gavi “La Meirana”, which carries the name of the estate. It is distinguished by its balanced, almond flavour and ideal served with fish and white meat dishes. The most prestigious wine produced is the Gavi D.O.C.G. di Gavi “Bruno Broglia” which originates from vineyards planted in 1953 and 1955. Over the years, the average yield of these vineyards has varied between 30 and 40 tons per hectare, approximately one third of the amount required by the Gavi regulation.
The harvest is kept in fruit-boxes, after the best grapes have been selected. Following eight months of refining in steel, it offers itself in all its enjoyable mineral quality. The Bruno Broglia has obtained the highest awards and opinions on both Italian and international food and wine guides and magazines.
Another cru produced on the estate comes from the “Villa Broglia” vineyard, which carries its name. A fine sparkling D.O.C.G. Spumante Brut wine called “Roverello” with the indication of Gavi del Comune Di Gavi and a Spumante Brut “Roverello Rosè” are also obtained using the charmat method. In the best years a Spumante Extra Brut “Broglia” is produced using the  classic traditional method.
